Which solution is better?

Objective: Students will design and test a solution to stop water from washing away soil. They will compare their solution with others.

Material:

water, container, loam, clay, sand, small plastic shovel

Procedure:

 1. Take a plastic container.

 2. Take some loam and make it into a small hill on one end of the container. Pat it down a little to make a firm surface

 3. Pour a little water on the top of the hill and observe it.

 4. Use some clay or sand to see if would it keep the water better.

 5. Use a toy shovel to dig a trench to collect the water and keep it from washing away soil.

 6. Pour a little water on top of the hill and observe it.

 7. Record your observations.
