How does heating and cooling change matter?

Scientists learn how matter changes when it is heated or cooled. What observations can you make about the claim that heating and cooling changes matter?

Objective: Students investigate how crayons change when they get hot and then change again when they cool.

Procedure:

1. Remove the paper from the crayon. Break the crayon into several pieces. Place the pieces in a small plastic cup.

2. Place the plastic cup in a location where it can receive direct sunlight. Place a thermometer nearby, and record the starting temperature.

3. After a few hours, observe the content of the cup. Record your observations and the temperature.

4. Next, place the plastic cup and the thermometer in a cooler with ice.

5. After a few hours, observe the content of the cup again. Record your observations and the temperature.

6. Tell if you could make the crayon look exactly the way it did when you started.

I placed the crayons in the plastic cup. After that I put the hairdryer as a heat source I turned it on and I put it opposite the cup

Here I noticed the cup affected by heat too so I covered it with foil, then after a while I noticed it started to melt

The thermometer shows 69 degrees when heating, then I placed the cup in the fridge to get it to freeze

Finally, after almost 1 hour it did freeze and I recorded the temperature as shows in the photos.

If it get more time it will record less temperature

So Heating change the state of crayons from solid to liquid, and cooling change the liquid to solid

The materials are wax, ice cube tray, and coloring powder

First we but the wax in the steel bowl which is but in boiling water bath and the second one heated in microwave to test another method and the results are the same
Next after 3 minutes its completely melted

Then we colored it
Finally we poured in ice cube tray and freezing them
Its became a crayon

The Material is red crayon, bowl, and ice cube tray

First we but the crayon in the bowl which is but in boiling water bath
Next we see after one minute it start melt

Then after 3 minutes it's completely melted
Finally we poured in ice cube tray and freezing it
Its turned to its original condition

I used crayons - freezer - microwave - thermometer

First I broke the crayons and put them in the garden but they not changed because the whether was cool

Next I put them in microwave , they turned to liquid

Then I measured the temperature

Finally I put them in freezer , they turned to so!id

Kareem Hashim

first, i placed the colored crayons in a plastic cup and used a water path for heating so the crayons melted then I pour the liquid crayons in an ice cube finally freeze it, and observed the change after cooling so it be hard and takes shape of ice cube

Lara Manar

in the second experiment, we apply heating and cooling to a crayon and observed the changes

1. at first we put a crayon in a hot bath to a boiling temperature of 100c so it melted and turned to liquid

2. Then we pour it to a star shape mold and cool it to a freezing point

3. at the freezing point the melted crayon retained its sold shape

Lara Manar

In the first experiment we made a crayon

1. we use wax and put it in a hot bath under boiling temperature so it melted

2. then we put a color powder and mix it very well

3. then we pour it into a star shape frame and made a star shape orange crayon and I wrote my name on it .

My observations on this experiment:

1. we put the crayons in a plastic cup.

2. We used the microwave to heat the crayons for 10 minutes.

3. we measured the temperature and it was 62 c.

4. we waited for around 30 minutes until it cooled down and the temperature was 30 c.

5. the melted crayons took the shape of the cup.

In this experiment, I applied heat to the pieces of Crayons..I notice that the the Crayon began to melt until it became liquid. After that, I put the liquid Crayon in the Circular mold and froze it

Finally, I got a circular solid crayon.
