How do plants survive in water?

Objective: Students will design and model a water plant. They will explain that plants need certain adaptations to live in the water.

Procedure:

1. Design a model of a water plant. The plant has roots in the gravel under the water,. Use strings to represent the roots. Use pipe cleaners or popsicle sticks to represent stems. The leaves are above the water. Use aluminum foil and cork to represent the leaves.

2. Draw and label your design in the book p.211

3. Build your model. Use glue and paper clips to fasten the roots, stems, and leaves together.

4. Test your model. Place your model in a container, full of water. Observe your model in the water. What adaptations does your model show? (write 2-3 sentences)

How My plant survived in Water:

I had long Bamboo plant , one of its branches  grew bigger and its almost about to get break apart from the plant ,I took a sharp knife and cut it in a clear cut ,Then I but it in glass vase filled with water and rocks in the bottom ..

I noticed that the plant adjusted itself to make new roots out of the branch to get water to survive …

After a while … the roots got longer and bigger and the plant seems to live very healthy and well

My Materials

Popsicle to represent stem

Wool  string to represent root

Some stones to represent soil

Foil paper to make the leaves

Adhesive to stick the parts of plant

Bowl fill with water

This plant represnt the plants in Mangrove forest which most part of the plant are under the water and the leaves are up to get the sunlight and air to breath.

This model shows how plants live in water and the stem is long so that the leaves are outside the water to be exposed to sunlight

1-I used a glass  bottle  with  water.

2-plastic sticks  considered  as the  stem  of  the  plant

3- Colored papers  are considered as leaves

4- Threads are roots

5- Cork

Materials :

-strips.

-cork leaves.

-glass flask

-gravels.

First I took strips and colored the part that represents the stem green , and left the root brown. Next I put the strips  under the water and pressed some gravels ,then  I put cork leaves . Finaly I completed My plant Model.

In this model we use

1.pipe cleaner for stem and roots

2.foil to represent the leaves

3.some heavy metal that represent the soil and rocks under water

4.and a large bowl

This model shows how the plants that live in water habitat adapt by grow a long stem to make the leaves above water surface so it can catch sunlight to get energy and make food.

Adaptations are many and varied. Many aquatic flowing plants have leaves that lie flat on the water for maximum sunlight collection. The stems of many aquatic plant have large air-filled areas to increase buoyancy. Many fruits of aquatic plants float on water, which increases dispersal as fruits and sees float away. Plants like cattails or reeds however may hold their fruits high above the water for wind dispersal. Many aquatic plants have deep, anchoring roots, but some, like duckweeds float freely and allow their roots to drift in the water below them. One aquatic plant is eel grass, which has adaptation for living in salt water

Water plants have flexible stem.

Leaves are over or close to the water surface to get enough sun light.

Materials: paper cleaner, string, foam paper. We make the plant. We put the plant in the water

The plant has long stem and light leaves that float on the water's surface to take sunlight .
